Feeding Thoroughbreds: Why Fibre Comes First
When it comes to feeding Thoroughbreds, simple really is best. These horses have digestive systems designed to graze all day, which means fibre is not just helpful, it is essential. A diet based around good quality hay, haylage and fibre based feeds keeps the gut moving, supports a healthy microbiome and provides a steady, calm source of energy instead of those sharp highs and lows that come from sugar and cereal feeds.
It can be tempting to think high protein mixes or grain will build topline, but muscle comes from correct work, not a bag of feed. Most Thoroughbreds who are hacking, schooling or enjoying light competition get all the protein they need from a forage based diet. In fact, too much protein can make them uncomfortable, lead to excess acid and put unnecessary strain on the body. The same goes for starch and grain: Thoroughbreds are sensitive, prone to ulcers and can become fizzy or anxious when fed large amounts of cereals.
Fibre is gentle on the stomach, supports a calm mind and keeps your horse healthy from the inside out. If your Thoroughbred needs more condition, you can add helpful extras like alfalfa, beet pulp or micronised linseed rather than reaching for sugary mixes. Think slow release energy, happy tummy and steady behaviour.
Fuel them like the incredible athletes they are, but remember most of us are not preparing for the five star eventing circuit every week. A fibre first, low sugar, low starch approach will always be your friend when caring for a Thoroughbred.
